A cut above the rest

Picture
_Being born and raised on the North Coast of Ireland, we at Battersby Souvenirs have felt very connected to this land. Although we've set foot in many far away lands, there is nothing quite like seeing the green fields that go on for miles, or the roar of the sea as it crashes into the ports. Time is ever changing with new laws being created, new highways, businesses that come and go and so on. But what remains is the memories that you grow up with, the sights and sounds that you never seem to find anywhere else. Looking around the towns, you see stores going out of business, unable to compete in today's global market. We hear constantly on the news that there is a recession and people can't pay their mortgages, while others find themselves on the streets.

Battersby Souvenirs made a conscious
decision to counteract that in whatever small way we can by investing in local businesses like Quinns the Printers in Belfast who produce all of our great postcards in the shops today. While it is true, we could have them created in a sweatshop on the other side of the planet at a fraction of the cost like many others, we have made a decision to source all of our products locally, either in Northern Ireland, the Republic, or mainland Britain. So not only are we supporting our local economies, you the customer are receiving genuine Northern Irish/Irish gifts. Needless to say, this is a much harder way to make a profit from our products but we feel the quality of craftsmanship in our local suppliers more than makes up for our loss of earnings. Plus, we are doing what we feel is right for the economy. In an ideal world, many more businesses would eagerly do the same but we do understand that this is a considerable sacrifice.

But this is our pledge. We will continue to work very hard to bring memorable souvenirs to Northern Ireland and further afield, whilst supporting the local economies of Northern Ireland and mainland Britain. We follow this up with giving 20 percent of each sale to "Gifts that give more" to aid the fight against world hunger. We thank you very much for your time reading this and also for your interest in Battersby Souvenirs.

                                                                                                         Our Pledge

It was after watching the documentary "what would Jesus buy?", that we at Battersby Souvenirs were reminded again how exploitive many of the major manufacturing companies have become towards what we would call the "third world". This was a documentary mainly about the commercialism of Christmas and how it has gotten out of hand, but what struck us most was how horribly the workers in these third world factories were treated. We highly recommend that everyone watch this documentary as we feel that awareness is the first step towards finding a solution.

This leads us on to our pledge. For every sale on this site, we will donate 20 percent of the proceeds into a program called "Gifts that give more" . This is by an American organisation and through them, collectively we will be giving something back to the world. Our main aim is to alleviate the suffering of those in dire need of nurishing food and good clean water. We envision a time when we are eventually able to give thousands a year to this great cause. We ask that you visit www.thehungersite.com every day to give a free cup of rice. It is as simple as one click which takes only seconds. Thanks very much.
